The UN high commissioner for human rights, Volker Turk, emphasized the importance of investing in human rights to address the significant challenges facing the world. He highlighted the critical work done by his office in 2024, including monitoring human rights violations, supporting survivors of slavery and torture, and advocating for the release of arbitrarily detained individuals. Turk stated that an additional $500 million is needed on top of the regular budget to continue this work in 2025. Despite receiving less funding than requested in the past, he expressed gratitude for the support of countries that have pledged to continue funding the UN rights office.
