UN chief defends UNRWA, says only ‘a few elements’ participated in Oct. 7

In a recent statement, U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres defended the UNRWA’s operations in Gaza, stating that only a few members of the organization are affiliated with Hamas. This comes after Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Danny Danon claimed that Hamas has completely taken over UNRWA. Guterres acknowledged that there had been some infiltration by Hamas within the organization, but he insisted that there is no evidence to support Israel’s claims. Meanwhile, Israel continues to accuse UNRWA of having ties to Hamas, with Danon defending an Israeli airstrike on a UNRWA school in Gaza. The U.S. had suspended funding to UNRWA due to the role some of its employees played in a massacre on Oct. 7.
