Syria’s interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa made his first trip abroad to Saudi Arabia, signaling a shift away from Iran as its main regional ally. Al-Sharaa, once aligned with al-Qaeda, landed in Riyadh with his foreign minister. Saudi Arabia had backed insurgent groups against former President Bashar Assad, but with the rise of al-Sharaa’s group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the dynamics have shifted. Al-Sharaa is trying to maintain ties with various populations in Syria and keep Iran and Russia at arms’ length to reassure the West and get sanctions lifted. The interim government still faces challenges from militant groups like ISIS, as shown by a recent car bomb explosion in Manbij.
