Swiss ‘burqa ban’ to take effect from 2025



Switzerland is set to implement a ban on facial coverings in public spaces, known as the “burqa ban,” starting on January 1. The ban was narrowly passed in a 2021 referendum and is controversial, with Muslim associations criticizing it. Those who violate the ban could face a fine of up to 1,000 Swiss francs. However, there are exceptions for places like planes, diplomatic premises, and places of worship. Facial coverings are still allowed for health and safety reasons, native customs, and other specific circumstances. Overall, the ban allows for certain exceptions to be made in certain situations.
