Spike in calls to poison control centers due to kids consuming energy drinks

The number of calls to US poison centers regarding children consuming energy drinks has increased by 20% in 2023, a concerning rise compared to previous years. Energy drinks like Red Bull and Monster contain high levels of caffeine, which can be dangerous for children and lead to serious health risks. The FDA and American Academy of Pediatrics advise against children and teenagers consuming these beverages to avoid complications like caffeine poisoning and cardiac arrest. Accidental ingestion of energy drinks by children is a common issue, with symptoms of caffeine overdose including increased heart rate and anxiety. The unregulated sale of high-caffeine drinks raises concerns about potential overdose and adverse effects on health.
