In Turkey, archaeologists discovered a tomb of a Roman gladiator from the third century B.C., later used to bury 12 individuals in the fifth century A.D. Gladiators were professional fighters who fought in arenas, and some volunteered to participate. The tomb contained crosses from the fifth century and was found in Selcuk, Izmir, Turkey. Not much is known about the 12 buried individuals, but they are believed to be from an upper-class background. The discovery provides insight into ancient burial practices and the city of Ephesus.
