North Korea launched a long-range ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan, following reports that they were preparing to test an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The missile was launched from near Pyongyang and fell into the sea about 87 minutes later. Japan condemned the action, but there was no reported damage. South Korea also reported that North Korea was preparing to launch an ICBM around the time of the U.S. presidential election. The U.S. strongly condemned the launch, calling it a violation of UN Security Council resolutions. North Korea’s last ICBM test was in December, with a flight time that could reach the mainland U.S. on a normal trajectory.
