Law on prevention of child marriages can’t be stunted by personal laws: SC | India news



The Supreme Court ruled that personal laws cannot hinder the prevention of child marriages, as they violate the free will of children to choose their life partner. Authorities should focus on preventing child marriages and protecting minors, penalizing offenders only as a last resort. The law’s success depends on tailored preventive strategies, multi-sectoral coordination, and community-driven approaches. The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act of 2006 aims to eradicate child marriages, replacing the Child Marriage Restraint Act of 1929.
