A man in Hong Kong has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for wearing a T-shirt with a protest slogan that was popular during the 2019 pro-democracy protests. The slogan “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times” was deemed seditious under the city’s national security law. The Chief Magistrate stated that allowing such acts of sedition to go unchecked could lead to chaos in society. The man, Chu Kai-pong, was arrested on the fifth anniversary of a major protest action. Despite his lawyer arguing that there was no evidence of incitement, the court found that Chu’s actions posed a risk to social order. The national security law was imposed by Beijing in 2020 to suppress the protests in Hong Kong.
