US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the US from several UN organizations, including the Human Rights Council, and to assess US financial contributions to the UN. The White House also withdrew from the UN relief organization for Palestinians and planned to evaluate involvement with UNESCO. These actions were taken in response to perceived “anti-American bias” within these agencies. The executive order calls for a review of American funding in the UN due to disparities among different countries. Trump has criticized US contributions to international organizations and urged other nations to increase their share. The Biden administration had previously suspended US funding to UNRWA in response to allegations of staff members supporting Hamas.
