2024 US Presidential elections: How is the U.S. President elected Explained

The United States is gearing up for the 2024 general election to elect the next President. The main contenders are Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump, with Green Party candidate Jill Stein also gaining some traction. The U.S. President is elected every four years on the first Tuesday of November. Candidates must meet certain criteria and go through a rigorous process of primaries, caucuses, and national conventions before the actual election day. The electoral college, not the popular vote, ultimately decides the President. The winner needs at least 270 electors’ votes. The U.S. Congress counts the electoral votes in early January, and the new President’s term begins on January 20.
