The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 by Communist East Germany to separate East and West Berlin, symbolizing the divide between the Western world and the Soviets during the Cold War. The fall of the Berlin Wall on Nov. 9, 1989, marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Communist dictatorship in East Germany. The reunification of Germany in 1990 and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 followed. Today, sections of the Wall remain as historical monuments, and places like Checkpoint Charlie serve as reminders of the city’s divided past.
