Siliguri Court sentences death penalty to convict in rape-murder case of minor

A convict in the 2023 rape and murder case of a minor girl was sentenced to death by a Siliguri Court in West Bengal. The convict, MD Abbas, was sentenced within 13 months of the heinous crime. The Additional Sessions Judge Anita Meherotra Mathur concluded the case after recording witness testimonies and arguments from the prosecution. Special Public Prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee stated that the death penalty was awarded based on two consecutive sections – murder and Section 6 of the POCSO Act. The incident occurred in August 2023, and the convict was arrested within six hours by the Matigara police.
