San Diego makes Byars NWSL’s 1st NCAA signing since end of draft

San Diego Wave FC has signed University of Texas forward Trinity Byars, making her the first active NCAA athlete to sign with an NWSL team since the recent elimination of the draft. Byars signed through the 2026 season with an option for 2027. The NWSL eliminated drafts and granted players full free agency, allowing college and youth players to sign directly with teams. Byars, who suffered a knee injury in her senior season at Texas, will join San Diego in January to complete her rehab. The club is excited to welcome her and believes she will be a valuable addition to the team.
