Residents welfare associations in Chennai oppose move to hike property tax

Residents welfare associations have put forth 10 resolutions during a meeting, urging the State to refrain from increasing property tax and refund water and sewer taxes collected without service. They have also requested a halt in further tax collection until connections are provided. The Street Vendors Act of 2014 was highlighted as not being properly implemented in congested areas, leading to encroachments and traffic issues. Concerns were raised about the shrinking Pallikaranai marshland and the proposed conversion into an eco-park, impacting the area’s ability to prevent flooding. The meeting also touched upon slum rehabilitation in North Chennai areas, suggesting the implementation of models like the Comprehensive Slum Rehabilitation Scheme of Maharashtra for better living conditions.
