The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is responsible for regulating the securities market to protect investors and promote market development. Madhabi Puri Buch, the first woman to head SEBI, took office in March 2022. She faced her first challenge when the Adani Group was accused of fraud, but a committee found no regulatory failure. Recently, Hindenburg Research accused Buch of conflicts of interest, which she denies. Despite internal unrest and opposition, SEBI is implementing stricter regulations for Foreign Portfolio Investors and derivatives trading. Calls for an independent review to address concerns about the SEBI chief’s integrity have been made.
