Iran aided Russia against Ukraine. Now it needs to call in the favor

Russia and Iran have a strong alliance, with Russia providing Iran with military support and weaponry. However, Iran is facing pressure from fighting Israel indirectly through its proxies. This has led to speculation that Iran may turn to Russia for help in defense capabilities and intelligence to detect potential direct Israeli attacks. While Russia is likely to assist Iran to some extent, it is unlikely to intervene militarily against Israel. The two countries are expected to finalize a strategic partnership agreement soon, but the extent of this alliance remains uncertain. Russia’s interests in the Middle East may be affected by the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. The recent bombings of Iranian forces near Syria’s Khmeimim Air Base, operated by Russia, have raised questions about Russia’s level of support for Iran in a wider conflict with Israel. Analysts suggest that Russia, already heavily involved in Ukraine, may not have the resources to fully support Iran. While the escalating conflict could impact Russian interests in the Middle East, Moscow seems inclined to adapt to the situation rather than directly intervene. If Russia were to get involved, it may do so indirectly by supplying weapons to Iranian proxy forces, particularly if it would weaken the U.S. rather than Israel.
