October is World Down Syndrome Awareness Month, a time to learn about and support those with the condition. There are about 5,700 babies born with Down syndrome in the U.S. each year, and over 400,000 people in the country currently live with it. The life expectancy of those with Down syndrome has increased significantly over the years. Down syndrome is a condition where a baby is born with an extra chromosome, typically chromosome 21. There are physical and developmental symptoms associated with Down syndrome. National Down Syndrome Awareness Month is important for promoting education and celebrating the abilities of those with the condition. The awareness ribbon for Down syndrome is blue and yellow, and World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated on March 21. You can observe Down Syndrome Awareness Month by educating yourself, spreading awareness on social media, participating in events and fundraisers, and supporting organizations like GiGi’s Playhouse and Special Olympics.
