A bathymetric study is currently underway in the Pallikaranai marshland to assess the volume of sludge that can be dredged to improve its water holding capacity and ecological functions. This study involves measuring underwater topography to develop detailed maps that can aid in managing water storage and flood patterns. The marshland, which received the Ramsar tag in 2022, is facing pressures from encroachments and sewage discharge. The study aims to address wetland degradation and inadequate flood water drainage by restoring natural inlets and outlets. The National Green Tribunal has also emphasized the importance of defining the marshland boundaries to prevent further encroachments.
