In everyday kitchen life, we often categorize foods as either vegetables or fruits. However, nature blurs the lines between these two categories. Some common foods that we consider vegetables are actually fruits in botanical terms. For example, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplants, bell peppers, lady’s fingers, avocados, green peas, pumpkins, and olives are all technically fruits. These foods may be used in savoury dishes, but they develop from the ovary of a flowering plant and contain seeds, making them fruits. Knowing the true botanical classification of these foods adds an interesting twist to our everyday cooking.
