With Panama Canal-U.S. tensions rising, ‘all options on the table,’ warns Trump’s top maritime official

President Donald Trump’s appointee Louis Sola, head of the Federal Maritime Commission, expressed concerns about Panama’s increasing ties with China. American businesses are facing challenges in bidding for business opportunities in the Panama Canal and ports due to unfair practices favoring Chinese companies. Sola highlighted issues such as Chinese companies being reimbursed for canal transits while American companies aren’t. He also raised concerns about China’s control over key port operations and infrastructure projects in Panama. Sola suggested that the U.S. government should take action to ensure fair competition and protect American interests. In a recent meeting, Sola mentioned that they talked about the high tolls set by the Panama Canal Authority. The tolls were raised in January, making it expensive for ships to pass through. Some vessels end up paying more than $1 million for each trip. It’s crucial because a significant amount of U.S. container traffic goes through the canal annually, amounting to $270 billion in cargo.
