Three Mile Island nuclear plant to help power Microsoft’s data-center needs

Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island nuclear plant’s Unit 1 will be restarted to provide clean energy to Microsoft’s data centers for its artificial intelligence operations. The unit was shut down in 2019 due to losses, while Unit 2 was closed after a partial core meltdown in 1979. Microsoft and Constellation Energy are collaborating to bring 800 megawatts back onto the grid, supporting Microsoft’s goal of becoming carbon negative. This move is part of a broader trend of companies investing in AI, with other shuttered nuclear plants across the country also being considered for reactivation. Despite doubts, Microsoft sees AI as the next big business opportunity, similar to the Industrial Revolution’s impact in history.
