Superbugs death toll could swell by millions over coming years – Times of India



A recent study published in The Lancet warns that more than 39 million people could die globally from antibiotic-resistant infections in the next 25 years. This issue, known as antimicrobial resistance (AMR), is expected to worsen in the coming decades. Over one million people already die each year due to AMR, a trend that has been growing. Bacteria’s immunity to common drugs is fueled by the overuse of antibiotics in humans and animals, making infections harder to treat and increasing risks in medical procedures. The United Nations has highlighted the importance of addressing AMR, as it poses a significant threat to global health and the economy. Urgent action is needed to develop new strategies and improve access to existing antibiotics to combat this growing public health crisis.
