Study Reveals Over 77 Percent Of Indian Children Lack WHO-Suggested Dietary Diversity

A recent study found that 77% of children in India between the ages of 6-23 months have a lack of diversity in their diets, according to WHO recommendations. The central region of the country has the highest prevalence of inadequate dietary diversity, with states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat reporting levels above 80%. On the positive side, there have been improvements in the consumption of certain food groups like eggs, legumes, and fruits and vegetables. However, there are still concerns about the consumption of breastmilk and dairy products decreasing. The study suggests that children of illiterate and rural-residing mothers, as well as those with health issues like anemia, are more likely to have non-diverse diets. The authors recommend a holistic approach from the government to address this issue, including improvements to the public distribution system and increased nutrition counseling.
