An annular solar eclipse is happening on Wednesday, creating a “ring of fire” phenomenon visible in parts of South America. This occurs when the Moon lines up between the Sun and Earth, but does not completely block out the Sun’s light. The Moon will be a bit further from Earth than usual, so it won’t cover the Sun entirely. A “crescent sun” will be visible before and after the ring. The eclipse’s path will start in the North Pacific, pass over the Andes and Patagonia regions, and end in the Atlantic. The eclipse will last over three hours, with the “ring of fire” expected to last just a few minutes. It’s important to not observe the eclipse with the naked eye to avoid damaging the retina.
