Food Safety Department officials conducted a surprise inspection at Sarojini Nagar Market to check for adulteration in sweets during the festive season. They are collecting samples from different shops and so far, no adulteration has been found. The inspection will continue throughout the festive season with a team of assistants and lab technicians. They are specifically testing milk-based sweets for starch adulteration, using a starch test to detect any presence of starch. Additionally, they are checking for the use of aluminium leaves instead of silver leaves in sweets, using a nitric acid test to distinguish between the two. Consumers can also test silver leaves by making them disappear in their hands, while aluminium leaves will not disappear.
