Militia groups push military government close to the brink in Myanmar



A year ago, three well-armed militias launched a surprise joint offensive in northeastern Myanmar, gaining significant territory and inspiring others to attack across the country. The military, initially in control with superior firepower and support from Russia and China, is now on the defensive. Resistance forces control a large area, while civilians face increased violence and displacement. The military may launch a counteroffensive, but faces challenges due to resistance groups closing in on major cities. If the military regime falls, ethnic tensions and influence from neighboring China could lead to further fragmentation. China’s attempts to negotiate a ceasefire have been unsuccessful so far.
