LNG’s 20-year greenhouse gas footprint found to be 30% more than coal’s: Study – Times of India

A recent study has found that liquefied natural gas (LNG) leaves behind a larger greenhouse gas footprint than coal over a 20-year period, and is equivalent to or even worse than coal over a 100-year period. Despite being considered a cleaner alternative to coal, the process of cooling and shipping LNG actually contributes significantly to its greenhouse gas emissions. Shale gas, from which LNG is made, is extracted through a process called ‘fracking’, which releases carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere. The study highlights that LNG’s climate footprint is always larger than that of natural gas, and even worse than coal. India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas plans to switch a third of heavy duty trucks to LNG to reduce pollution.
