Lapsed fan’s guide to the 2024 Stanley Cup Final: Everything you need to know about Panthers-Oilers

After nearly two months of Stanley Cup playoffs, the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers are the last two teams standing. The Rangers were hoping for a win, but the Panthers shut them out. The Panthers and Oilers are very far apart geographically, with the Panthers known for throwing plastic rats on the ice and the Oilers for throwing steaks. The Panthers are trying to win their first Stanley Cup, while the Oilers are hoping to end their drought since 1990. Canada is not necessarily rallying around the Oilers, as Canadian teams often have rivalries that prevent them from supporting one another. The Panthers, once a terrible team, have improved under coach Paul Maurice. The Florida Panthers have made the playoffs for four straight seasons, thanks to GM Bill Zito adding key players and hiring a new coach. They are now in the Stanley Cup Final and have improved defensively this season. The Panthers will face the Edmonton Oilers, who turned their season around under new coach Kris Knoblauch and have strong performances from star players like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The Oilers also have standout performances from players like Zach Hyman and defenseman Evan Bouchard. It will be an exciting matchup in the Stanley Cup Final. In the playoffs, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has 20 points in 18 games and is the longest-serving current Oiler. The Edmonton Oilers have one of the most dominant power-play units in NHL history, converting on over 37% of their power plays. McDavid, Draisaitl, Bouchard, and Hyman play key roles in this successful power play. The Panthers have a strong penalty-killing team, but the Oilers are the best in the playoffs at 93.9%. The key to victory for the Panthers is to limit McDavid and Draisaitl’s time and space, while the Oilers rely on their star players to drive them to victory. Someone will earn their first sip from the Stanley Cup this month, making for an exciting series between the two teams.
