Gunmen kill 14 in a Shiite area of Afghanistan in one of the deadliest attacks this year



Gunmen killed 14 people in a Shiite-majority area in central Afghanistan, in one of the deadliest attacks this year. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the assault, which targeted Hazara Shiite people traveling between provinces. The Taliban also condemned the attack and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. The U.N. mission in Afghanistan expressed condolences and called for an investigation. The attack is part of a pattern of violence by ISIS in the country, including recent suicide bombings and attacks on security forces. The targeting of Shiite Hazara people is considered a serious crime by international experts.
