The recent glacial lake outburst flood in Sikkim, which claimed 14 lives, has raised concerns about the vulnerability of the Himalayan region to such catastrophic events. In response, the Centre has launched a national GLOF risk mitigation programme targeting 190 high-risk glacial lakes across four states and two Union Territories. The programme, led by the National Disaster Management Authority, aims to assess hazards, install monitoring stations and early warning systems to prevent future disasters. With climate change leading to the formation of more glacial lakes, reducing GLOF risk is a challenging but crucial task. The government is taking a comprehensive approach to address this issue.
