Florida’s progressive abortion amendment fails following DeSantis push against ‘bait and switch’ legislation

The abortion amendment in Florida failed after voters voted “No” on the progressive legislation, which required a 60 percent supermajority to pass. Governor DeSantis campaigned against the measure, calling it a “bait and switch.” The issue of abortion has been contentious in Florida, with proponents arguing that the current 6-week abortion ban is too restrictive. The majority of ballot measures across the country seek to amend restrictions on abortion passed in Republican-led states after the Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade. Both former President Trump and Vice President Harris have taken stances on abortion during the election cycle, with Trump leaving abortion access to the states and Harris advocating for legislation to restore national abortion rights.
