First Japanese

A top luxury hotel firm from Japan is planning to open a hot spring resort in upstate New York, which will be the first of its kind run by a Japanese company in the United States. Onsens are bath houses where patrons relax naked together in mineral-rich water, a popular industry in Japan. Hoshino Resorts will open the inn in Sharon Springs in 2028, as part of their second attempt to enter the U.S. market. The firm aims to reflect Japanese culture in their concept, learning from their failed attempt during Japan’s 1980s boom years. Sharon Springs, once a vibrant tourist hub, is in need of revitalization, making it an ideal location for the new hotel.
