Election denying ex-county clerk sentenced to 9 years for tampering with election equipment

Former Mesa County clerk Tina Peters was sentenced to 9 years in prison for official misconduct related to a security breach in the county’s voting system. She allowed unauthorized access to county election equipment, leading to data being posted online and machines needing replacement. Despite being convicted, Peters maintained her innocence, claiming she was trying to protect the election. However, prosecutors argued she abused her power for personal gain. Peters’ actions cost the county over $1 million and led to death threats against election workers. She also unsuccessfully ran for secretary of state in 2022, alleging fraud in that election as well.
