Belarus held an election that is widely seen as orchestrated to ensure President Alexander Lukashenko’s continued hold on power. Campaign posters show his smiling face, but many opponents, imprisoned or exiled, call it a sham. Lukashenko has been in power for three decades, earning the nickname “Europe’s Last Dictator.” The election saw only token opposition, with top challengers loyal to him. Opposition leader-in-exile Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya called it a “senseless farce.” The EU rejected the election as illegitimate, threatening new sanctions. Concerns of vote-rigging and crackdown on dissent persist, with Lukashenko hoping to ease his dependence on Russia after the election.
