A tragic incident occurred on Georgia’s Sapelo Island when part of a ferry dock collapsed, resulting in at least seven deaths and multiple injuries. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources conducted search and rescue efforts with helicopters and boats. The collapse took place during a celebration of the island’s Gullah-Geechee community, descendants of Black slaves. The cause of the collapse is unknown, and the gangway has been secured. Governor Brian Kemp expressed condolences and offered state resources for aid. The community of Hogg Hummock, founded by former slaves, was the focus of the event. The Gullah-Geechee communities along the coast retain their African heritage, including unique skills and crafts.
