Clemson, Florida State, and the ACC are in talks about changing revenue distribution to give more money to schools with higher brand valuation and television ratings. This proposal also includes potentially altering the grant of rights agreement that currently runs through 2036. The ACC distributed less money per school than the SEC, and the revenue gap is expected to grow. Florida State’s athletic director has called this gap an existential threat and pushed for a new revenue-sharing policy. Clemson and Florida State filed lawsuits against the ACC to extricate themselves from the grant of rights. The proposal also suggests reducing the term of the grant of rights. While there is some support for the basic idea, there are concerns about the details, such as properly evaluating TV ratings. The ACC is also in talks with ESPN about extending the television contract. The ACC declined to comment on the discussions, but the commissioner remains optimistic about finding a solution to secure the league’s standing.
