How an emergency fill-in coach helped a women’s golf team to a title

In September, Charleston Southern urgently needed an interim women’s golf coach. With their assistant coach taking over the men’s team, Michael Causey, the assistant AD for athletic communications, stepped in to help. Despite having minimal golf experience, Causey focused on supporting the team in other ways, like driving them to events, providing snacks, and offering encouragement. The experienced players on the team took the lead, and with Causey’s positive presence, they performed well and won the tournament. Despite the lack of a full-time coach, Charleston Southern’s women’s golf team emerged victorious, showing that teamwork and support can lead to success. Causey initially thought the idea of receiving a trophy for his volunteer work was amusing, but he was quickly impressed by the team’s mentality when they first started playing. He was inspired by their confidence and approach to the course, making him believe winning was a possibility. Causey credits the team’s players for their championship performance, but they made sure to acknowledge his contribution as well. Font expressed gratitude for Causey’s leadership, describing him as truly amazing and stating they couldn’t have asked for a better coach.
