Why Are South’s Netas Asking People To Have More Children? The Answer Lies In North’s Fertility Rate

Two chief ministers from southern India, Chandrababu Naidu and MK Stalin, have raised concerns about the delimitation process potentially reducing their states’ representation in Parliament. This is due to the lower total fertility rates (TFR) in the south compared to the north, which has led to negative population growth in the southern states over time. The delimitation process, based on the last census, could result in fewer Lok Sabha seats for states with lower TFR, while states with higher TFR like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar may gain more seats. The next delimitation may see an increase in total Lok Sabha seats, potentially leading to a significant shift in representation across different states.
