‘We Fight For Women, We’re Not Orthodox’: Khap Panchayats Continue to Influence Polls in Haryana



Santosh Dahiya, a teacher at Kurukshetra University, is the first woman head of a khap panchayat in Haryana. She believes that khaps are pro-women and progressive, despite criticism of being orthodox. She shared examples of how they support women in difficult situations. Khaps hold significant influence in Haryana politics, with the ability to swing over 12% of votes. Politicians cannot ignore them, and they often seek their support during elections. In the upcoming polls, a prominent khap has fielded their own candidate to ensure their voice is heard even after the elections. Santosh supports women wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat and believes in empowering women in Haryana.
