In the 2019 Jharkhand assembly elections, Purnima Singh from Congress won against Ragini Singh from BJP in the key battleground of Jharia. This marked a shift in power from the long-dominant ‘Singh Mansion’ to ‘Raghukul’. The Singh family has traditionally held influence in Jharia, but with Purnima’s victory, the dynamics have changed. The region’s politics are heavily influenced by coal mining and issues such as displacement, rehabilitation, pollution, and access to drinking water. The upcoming 2024 elections will see Ragini Singh from BJP and Purnima Singh from Congress facing off once again. The region has a total of 3,01,564 voters, with efforts being made to increase voter turnout. The elections are scheduled for November 20, with the results to be announced on November 23.
