Sanjay Kumar Verma has been appointed as the new Director General of Police in Maharashtra, replacing Rashmi Shukla who was removed by the Election Commission. Verma, a 1990-batch IPS officer set to retire in 2028, will take over ahead of the upcoming assembly polls. Shukla was removed following complaints from opposition parties, with allegations of phone tapping of politicians. Verma, who led the SIT investigating the killing of Govind Pansare, was approved by the Election Commission and appointed by the state government. He will take charge from the current Mumbai Commissioner of Police.
