A barge that sank off the coast of Thiruvanathapuram is now posing a threat to fishing vessels in the area. The barge was towing when it sank, and is now stuck on a sandbar near the shore. The Kerala Swatantra Matsya Thozhilali Federation is concerned about the impact on fisher’s vessels and have urged the State government and Port department to remove it. The barge was brought for dredging the Muthalapozhi harbour, and had previously sustained damages. The Vizhinjam international seaport authorities have instructed the contractor to urgently remove the barge, as over 80% of it is now underwater. The barge’s position could change further due to wave dynamics in the region.
