SC seeks Centre’s response on plea by woman who left Islam to be governed by secular law

The Supreme Court of India is considering a plea from a woman in Kerala who was born a Muslim but no longer believes in the religion. She is asking to be governed by the secular Indian Succession Act of 1925 instead of sharia law. The court has asked the government to respond to the petition, which argues that individuals should have the right to believe or not believe in a religion without facing discrimination. The woman, who is part of a group called Ex-Muslims of Kerala, is seeking the right to inherit property and other civil rights under secular law rather than being subject to Muslim Personal Law. The court is considering the legal implications of her request and the need for potential legislative changes.
