The Power Minister informed the assembly that a 5% increase in power demand next summer could lead to severe restrictions. Last summer, there was a 15% spike in demand for power, which was managed by KSEB through various restrictions. To improve Kerala’s power import capacity, KSEB is planning to increase it by 800MW in the coming years. This would raise the total import capacity to 5,000MW from the current 4,269MW. The minister also mentioned plans to address low voltage issues in Malappuram, Kasargod, and Idukki by setting up new substations, augmenting existing ones, and adding new power lines. Additionally, efforts are being made to enhance power supply to Kannur and Kasargod using two feeders at Areekode 220kV substation.
