NTPC Kayamkulam to pioneer methanol-based power generation in India

The Rajiv Gandhi Combined Cycle Power Project in Kayamkulam is set to start generating electricity using methanol, a cleaner fuel with lower emissions. This pilot project, a first in India, aims to reduce power generation costs, support a circular carbon economy, and lower emissions. The project will involve test firing methanol in the plant’s gas turbine system for a year, with plans to eventually operate at 100% load. This initiative by NTPC is part of efforts to explore alternative fuel options and optimize existing infrastructure. If successful, this technology could be implemented in other NTPC gas turbines in the future.
