The backwater landscape of Kottayam in Kumarakom is set to receive a major makeover under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme by the Union Ministry of Tourism. The first phase will focus on transforming the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary into an eco-tourism hub with developments like kiosks, accessible footpaths, and new structures. Future phases will cover other areas in the backwater landscape, including the Malikayal lakeside park and houseboat parking facility. Kumarakom, known for its Responsible Tourism initiative, is also recognized as a women-friendly destination, with many visitors experiencing the vibrant village life. Tourism has become a significant source of income for households in the region.
