KSRTC urged to launch dedicated city bus fleet for Kochi

Over 100 Thirukochi buses were introduced over 15 years ago to reduce private vehicles in the city, but were diverted to suburban towns shortly after. Protests are growing due to the delay in starting dedicated city bus services. The withdrawal of the double-decker bus on the Angamaly-Thoppumpady route has also sparked criticism. Intra-city private buses stop running at 8 p.m., leaving commuters vulnerable to overcharging by autorickshaw drivers. Calls are being made for the KSRTC to introduce a city bus fleet operating until midnight and for stricter enforcement of fare meters. The MVD has suggested the KSRTC could operate city circular routes and introduce e-buses funded by CSML. However, KSRTC sources cite a shortage of buses and crew as a barrier to launching city services.
