The Elephant Rehabilitation Centre at Kottoor in Thiruvananthapuram has undergone a major facelift and is set to reopen to the public. The centre features state-of-the-art facilities for housing 50 captive elephants, including large enclosures designed for group living and special areas for baby elephants and those in musth. The goal of the centre is to mitigate human-wild elephant conflicts and improve the welfare of captive elephants. Visitor amenities include an entrance plaza, cafeteria, and areas for observing elephant bathing and feeding. The centre is expected to become a major tourist attraction in Kerala and the elephant natural history museum will be fully operational by January next year.
