Union Minister George Kurian suggested that Kerala should declare itself as backward in education, infrastructure, and social welfare if it wants more funds from the Centre. He explained that the Centre provides financial packages to states based on their backwardness on various indices. His comments came after criticism of the union budget by the ruling CPM and opposition Congress in Kerala. The state leaders expressed disappointment with the budget for neglecting their demands. In response, CPM state secretary M V Govindan criticized Kurian’s remarks, stating that Kerala should focus on further development instead of going backward.
